Interested in Becoming Catholic?

            Do you have an interest in learning more about the Catholic Faith? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process where adults “after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. By God’s help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and at the proper time will receive the sacraments fruitfully” (RCIA Rite Book #1).

            The RCIA process is divided into four periods of formation. The first period is that of inquiry, where those who are interested may come and ask questions about the faith. In doing so, the inquirers learn more about how God is acting in their own faith journey.  The second period is that of the catechumenate, which includes catechesis through a study of the Sunday scriptures.  The third period is called the period of purification and enlightenment, in which a catechumen prepares for the reception of the sacraments with deep prayer and discernment. This period ends with the actual reception of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The final period is call mystagogy. This time is devoted to spending time with the neophytes, or new Catholics, helping them break open and understand the Christian experience, helping them deepen their spiritual lives, and assisting them to enter more fully into the life of the faith community.

            RCIA is a wonderful process of conversion.  The process will help build a strong faith community and special bond between those seeking to become Catholic and the participating members.  It will increase understanding of the teachings of the church.  It will increase and deepen the prayer lives of those involved.  It will renew the commitment of the current church members to their baptismal vows.  And it will create a church community in which all members feel a call to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.
